Renovating Lavatories in a Primary School in Salah
There are a number of schools in this region which have suffered from wars, sanctions and general neglect. Many primary school children have been studying in unacceptable conditions but there are so many in such appalling states of disrepair that some simply slip off the funding and reconstruction agenda. In one school the lavatories consisted of what looked like an animal’s feeding trough on one side and squalid stalls on the other. Many children simply squatted on the concrete floor. The smell was abhorrent.
For less than $4,000 and the hard work of a local contractor it was possible to completely renovate the bathrooms, install flushable lavatories, fix the plumbing and put in sinks and running water. All in less than a month.
Not only has this project improved the situation in the short term for these children, it has put the rest of the work that is required on this school back onto the priority list. We look forward to hearing that the school is fully renovated in the near future.
